Cog & Pearl was born in the back of a cab late one evening in early 2002. As originally conceived by partially unemployed and soul-scouring partners Kristin Overson and Seth Walter, the store was to be a place of great convergence: artist-made goods of all sorts, their own disparate tastes, a means of living independently of corporate bosses, cubicles and train commutes, and an excuse to listen to music they liked all day. The one defining rule? They had to love everything they decided to carry. Or at least one of them did and had to convince the other (no pie charts please).
Now a fully fledged Brooklyn store, Cog & Pearl's gamut of handmade items includes jewelry, personal and home accessories, apparel, and fine art as well as books, cards and the occasional uncategorizable but gotta-have-it thing. We're proud to say the store would be nothing without the wonderful designers whose work makes our work so much fun, and we hope you enjoy perusing the wares we offer. Oh yeah, and that occasionally you'll buy something.
Directions by train: take the M or R to Union Street, the 2 or 3 to Bergen Street.
We love to see new, potentially perfect-for-Cog & Pearl stuff and we welcome submissions. It's pretty easy—just send an email to submissions@ cogandpearl.com with a few photos of whatever it is you make.
Please do not drop by unexpectedly with samples! We won't have the time to look at your work this way with any kind of real attention. (Plus it doesn't give us a chance to fix our hair and do the dishes.)
Though we look at work on an ongoing basis, we are not always able to respond personally to submission inquiries. But feel free to send a follow-up email if you're not sure we received your initial submission message.
It's true, we need all the help we can get. If you're interested in working for Cog & Pearl, contact us at info@cogandpearl.com with Job in the subject line, a note about what kind of work you're interested in (i.e., helping in the store or online), and some kind of job experience info—a resume's helpful but not necessary.
